1800년대에 Lyrical Ballads에 첨가된 The Preface에서 Wordsworth는 "모든 좋은 시는 힘찬 감정의 자유스러운 발로이다. 그것은 고요 속에서 회상된 정서로부터 그 근원을 갖는다."(All good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility)라고 시를 정의하고 있다. 이는 Wordsworth의 시들을 통해 확인할 수 있다. <I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud>는 <The Daffodils>라는 제목으로도 알려져 있다.
Wordswoth는 한 살 아래인 누이동생 Dorothy와 1802년 4월 15일 Grasmare 호숫가를 산책했다. Dorothy도 Wordsworth와 같이 섬세하고 예민한 시적 재능을 가지고 그를 도우며 시적 동반자가 되었다. 그날, 그녀는 아름다운 수선화를 보았다고 Journal에서 다음과 같이 기록하였다.
Where we were in the woods below Gowbarrow Park we saw a few daffodils close to the water-side. As we went along there were more, and yet more; and at last, under the bough of the trees, we saw there was a long belt of them along the shore. I never saw daffodils so beautiful. They grew among the mossy stones about them: some restedtheir heads on the stones as on a pillow; the rest tossed, and reeled, and danced, and seemed as if they verily danced with the wind, they looked so gay and glancing.
