1. Introduction 서 시
Hear the voice of the Bard! 시인의 목소리를 들어라!
Who Present, Past, & Future sees ; 현재, 과거, 미래를 보는;
Whose ears have heard 그의 귀는 듣고 있다
the Holy word 거룩한 말씀을
That walk`d among the ancient trees ; 태초에 나무들 사이를 거닐던
Calling the lapsed Soul 타락의 영혼을 부르며
And weeping in the evening dew ; 저녁 이슬에 울면서
That might controll 다스리고
The starry pole, 별빛 하늘을
And fallen, fallen light renew! 타락되고, 떨어진 빛을 새롭게 하는!
“O Earth, O Earth, return! “오 지구여, 오 지구여, 돌아오라!
Arise from out the dewy grass ; 이슬의 풀밭에서 일어나라;
Night is worn, 밤이 가고
And the morn 아침은
Rises from the slumberous mass.” 잠든 대지로부터 솟아 오른다.”
“Turn away no more ; “더 이상 떠나지 말아라 ;
Why wilt thou turn away? 왜 너는 가려 하느냐?
The starry floor 별빛 하늘과
The watry shore 물의 해안은
Is giv`n thee till the break of day.” 새벽이 올 때까지 너에게 주어진다.”
* Introduction은 타락한 인간 영혼의 경험 세계를 상징하는 것으로 이성의 지배아래 억압받고 있는 경험 세계에 대한 시인의 의도를 밝힌 시이다. 한편 근원은 창세기 3:6-9(사탄의 유혹으로 아담과 하와가 선악과를 따먹는 장면과 하나님의 눈을 피하는 장면)에 있다.
