4. 파스칼에 있어서 기독교적 시학을 위한 출발점
1) 역설적 인간 조건에 관한 성철
In particular, I am concerned with his(Pascal) uncovering(발가벗기다, 폭로하다, 탈모하다), in the Pensees and elsewhere, of what he calls the grandeur and misere, the greatness and wretchedness(비참함, 초라함, 야비함), of the human condition.(Edwards 2) 이런 파스칼의 인간 본성에 관한 접근은 대단히 단순하며, 기독교적이다. 하지만, 파스칼은 여기서 끝나지 않고 그 속에서 하나의 conceptual device for the most wide-ranging exploration을, 즉 a precise pattern for understanding the pattern of everything을 추구한다(Edwards 2-3). 파스칼에게 있어서 All that is great about a man derives from his 'first nature,' given to him in 'the state of creation.' His wretchedness - blindness, 'concupiscence'(색욕, 욕정, 정욕), mortality(죽음의 불가피성) - is constituted by his 'second nature.' which has resulted from the original sin of Adam. A man is therefore no longer a 'simple subject'; his condition is double, and he will appear plausibly great or wretched according to the perspective in which he is viewed. In Pascal's dual perspective, he is at every moment both himself and the opposite of himself; ravelled in contrarieties, he is 'chaos', 'prodigy'(비범, 신동, 경의, 경탄) and 'chimera'(접목 등에 의해서 두 가지 이상의 다른 조직을 가진 생물체).
