It is now the second anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, as we look back we see tragedy, heroism, and we find ourselves asking many questions. There are many things that must be questioned; Robert Jensen chooses to question our reaction to these horrific events.
Jensen begins his speech Goodbye to Patriotism by justifying his statement calling patriotism “perhaps the single most morally and intellectually bankrupt concept in human history (1)”. His justification for this very strong statement is that America claims that it is part of the International community. Are we? Or are we just Americans? Jensen asks if we are loyal to the war effort, purely because it is there, then we cannot then make the moral choices about whether it is right or wrong. He explains that he is often told to keep his disagreement until after the conflict is over, to support the troops, and that if he does not love this country, then he should leave it.
