Addiction and Habit
Resources in Aquinas
The category of habit provides tools for analyzing human action in terms other than the standard binaries that characterize most contemporary theorizing about addiction.
Indeed, many of the most mysterious features of addictive behavior become less perplexing if we think of addiction as an exercise of habit.
For instance, interpreting addiction in light of the category of habit can illuminate why persons continue to act addictively even when they are rationally convinced they should not, why addicted persons speak of being compelled to act addictively yet are able to recover without medical intervention, and why addicted persons who have been in recovery for months or even years may suddenly relapse.
