본문내용
Williams objectified his own life as the background of his plays, recasting the specific elements as the material for the drama. Geographically, Williams is from the South; socially, he went through the Civil War; and economically, he is the survivor of the Great Depression. Among those factors, especially his geographical and social factors affect his plays in the major way. The early 20th century in American society is represented mainly by the word confusion. After the South’s defeat in the Civil War, the southern agrarian society collapsed, and it was replaced by the new urban society. The confusion was mainly among those Southerners, especially aristocrats, who lost their ground, their glorious legacy, and their wealth. Those aristocrats had two choices; they could accommodate themselves to the change, or choose to be alienated from the newly established society. The main characters in Williams’s plays are usually the ones who took the latter option; he builds his plays around the Old Southerners, whose traditional values are broken after the war.
