Have you ever seen Korean people stutter when foreigners ask for directions in English on the street? Why do they have difficulties speaking English, even though they have learned it over 10 years? In my opinion, Korean English education system produces poor returns compared to the time and effort involved because it has focused on passive, traditional and inefficient ways. As Koreans have got more interested in English, the government has revised educational curriculum several times, but it still has many problems to be worked out. Here are some reasons that support my opinion on the basis of Korean traditional English education compare to what we have learned in class.
First of all, we have studied English based on reading and listening which the reader or listener receives information perceptively of four basic skills. Students were forced to read and listen repeatedly and excel at memorization to get high scores on the tests. Such methods made our purposes not using English but only getting good grades.
