Books
My advice to a major publisher would be to give free gifts to the customers who buy the book. For example, if the book is about babies, you can give a free gift that pertains to babies such as a coupon for baby products. Another example is that, if the book is about cooking, you can add some discount coupons for purchasing cooking materials or grocery. Therefore, in the above two examples, women would be my target market.
Newspapers
I would advise the publisher to make the newspapers more attractive and colorful by adding “juicy” stories, or charming drawings in the blank spaces.
