1. Irony
a literary device that develops meaning by putting together seemingly contrasting concepts or ideas. Irony occurs when there is a difference between what is asserted or believed, and what is actually the truth.
(1) Verbal irony
something is said that is the opposite of its intended meaning.
(2) Situational irony (expectation vs. reality)
when there is an incongruity between what is expected to happen and what actually happens due to forces beyond human comprehension or control.
(3) Dramatic irony
when the words and actions of the characters of a work of literature have a different meaning for the reader that they do for the characters.
