To separate and refine two substances with similar solubility properties by using strong acids and strong bases.
2. Theory
a) Separation of mixtures
- Separate the desired material into pure states.
extraction, chromatography, distillation
b) Recrystalization
- Using the solubility properties proportional to the temperature, if the
temperature slowly lowers, the solute is extracted as crystals.
c) Solubility
- Amount of solute that dissolves in 100g of solvent Solubility of most
compounds is proportional to temperature. d) Choice of solvent
- Solubility of impurities is high and solubility of the material you want is low.
- There is a high solubility difference between low and high temperatures.
e) Speed of crystal formation
- If this process is too fast, the crystals will be small and brittle.
