Ⅰ. Statement of Facts
Plaintiff Linda Alexander who is a BTI(Briarwood Tennis, Inc.) member and the top female player on the BTI team claimed against BTI and its tennis director, Sandy Bell.
Alexander alleged that she suffered eye injury after being struck by a ball hit by Bell and she has been interfered with her ability to play high-level competitive tennis because she must wear the sport safety glasses. Alexander wanted to work on her net game with Bell to see if she could transfer what she was doing a game situation when about three weeks before the Amateur game opening. The injury occurred during a final warm-up session. Bell as usual, hit a medium speed forehand that glanced off the side of her racquet, the ball bounced up and hit her in right eye. Alexander screamed with pain, crumpled to the court, immediately she was rushed to Weston Memorial's emergency room. By Dr. Carole Henderson, When seen, She was in great pain with intraocular hemorrhaging and inflammation of the delicate membrane that forms the colored part of eye in Iritis. So, She was prescribed drug therapy at first, Emergency laser surgery was scheduled to reattach patient's retina to the choroid. Reattachment surgery was successful and normal vision was returned. Now she can usual work and other activities, including sports and receiving medical attention for routine follow-up examination.
