For most people, an apartment or a house will likely come to mind as a possible place of residence.
In either one, there are usually a number of bedrooms and bathrooms, a kitchen, and a main living room situated near the center of the residence. However, traditional Korean housing, han-ok differed quite considerably from the type of housing that we’re familiar with now.
To start with, a traditional Korean residence consisted of a rather large courtyard with living quarters built around two, three, or all four sides of this courtyard.
The building that surrounded the courtyard was most often one-storied and consisted of several rooms and hallways. Also, on top of the building, magnificent tiles adorned the roof. Even today, the tiled roofs of these buildings generate much awe. In addition, the building itself was enclosed by high walls.
