Relations

In her writing Relations published in Identity Theory, Eula Biss presents three different cases that illustrate the American experience of race and asks its readers to cast doubt on misguided notions on race and identity. The first case discusses a controversy that arises as a white woman who gave birth to a twin of different color: white and black is forced to give up her rights as a mother to the black child for the “well-being” of the child. In the second case, researches on black and white children’s reveal how the majority of children, regardless of their colors, adopt one common idea on beauty: the more white the more beautiful/good you are. And the last case narrates the confounding experience of the author’s bi-racial cousin as she is to play two disparate social roles/stereotypes.
