1. Linguistics: The Science of Language
-Language: One of the most prominent feature that distinguishes human beings from animals.
-Linguistics: The study of language. It gives us an insight into the human mind.
-Linguists: They try to formulate generalization about linguistic data, i.e. language.
1) Well formed vs. Ill formed
(i) I don`t like detective stories. (grammatical)
(ii) *I detective stories like. (ungrammatical)
2) SVO hypothethis
3) (i) Jeeves is baking a cake.
(ii) Detective stories, I don`t like. (Topicalization)

"The total of all the rules and principles that have been formulated with respect to a language constitutes the grammar of that language. Grammar is a coherent system of rules and principles. We can say that a grammar generates the sentences of a language." (Haegeman. 2005: 5)
