Introduction

The United Kingdom, which obtained its membership late but having significant influence on the European Union, has long been at the centre of controversies among the EU countries because of its peculiar political and economical situation. To identify this situation and explain why the UK has been an ‘awkward partner’ in the EU, this essay starts from byby exploring the large context of British culture and narrow-down the scope to explain British political culture in which tradition and sovereignty are accounted for. After analysing Britain’s EU policies using the concept of pragmatism, it finishes the text by explaining the role of political parties and media. Rather than listing chronological events, this essay tries to posit them in a comprehensive outline so that the underlying reason for the UK being an ‘awkward partner’ in the EU could be argued in the broader context of political structure.

1. General Unfriendliness to Europe

To explain the reason why Britain has become an awkward partner within the EU, first it is necessary to look at Britain’s social or cultural characteristics. This essay will first explore how British culture affected Britain’s public opinion about Europe in general.
British people’s comprehension about Europe is largely moulded by their notion of history, geographic influence in part, personally formed opinions about particular countries in Europe and overall, their inherent ‘Brutishness’: which are likely to be linked into their negative impression about Europe as a political union. In a literary example, the attitudes about Europe and Britain it self can be seen at the famous quote from a Shakespeare’s play, Richard II.
