Part 1. Research Background

It is true that we`re in the most complex social-interaction system ever. Development of the internet access has enabled us to connect easily with each other, and through internet, we are now able to not only buy things in remote distance, but also sell our things immediately to someone overseas. Everyone seemed to admit that e-commerce had certainly changed the business paradigm significantly, and traditional brick-mortar companies had no option but to sit back and watch newborn e-retailers taking their customers. However, the recent news indicates that the future for brick-and-mortars might not be as gloomy as they expected. Online retailers are facing serious competition as traditional brick-mortar companies also started to initiate e-commerce sites that offer online purchasing, 24-7 customer call center, and online catalogs. We recently heard the news that dotcom retailers, until past several years seem to have been dominating the e-commerce area by winning on timid brick-and-mortar companies, enticing consumers with cheap prices and perks such as free shipping. And while the dot-coms wounded many old brick-mortar companies, in recent months their dominance is on the decline, and the online brick-and-mortar companies have fought back with highly successful click-and-mortar strategies.
