All throughout history women have had a fighting relationship with men for equal rights for one another; men have always thought of women to be inferior to them and women do not match up with men. That is, women have the job of completing domestic tasks while men do the “manly” things that men do. Although women have gained equal rights to do the things men do in recent history, women are always viewed as subordinates. In her story, “The Lottery”, Shirley Jackson portrays a society in which men are held higher than woman. By portraying these gender roles in the text, Jackson is trying to get us to think that men are a cut above women.
Jackson presents the women in her story as domestic housewives and the men as the head of the house. In “The Lottery” a small village has an annual lottery to see who will be stoned so the population will not grow any larger.
