Introduction
This short story, Young Goodman Brown is about a man who loses his religious faith in a forest on one night and live rest of his life in disbelief toward everyone in his town. This drastic change in his mind is due to the series of events happened in the forest. So in this story, the forest is very important place and its setting is quite important in creating mystical atmosphere.
Body
This short story has “framing setting .” Framing setting means “opens with a particular description and then returns to the same setting at the end.” It starts in a town where the characters live and it ends in the same town. However, the atmosphere in the beginning and the end is very different. The town in the beginning of the story is full of faithful believers and holly people, including Goodman Brown’s wife, Faith. Town is a kind of symbol of daylight, belief, sincerity, faith, true religion and love. On the other hand, the forest where Young Goodman Brown enters to do his errand, depicted as dark, damp, horrible, impious and evil.
