As Cult Films are known as films that possess unusual, anti-socialistic elements and shocking scenes, both movies obviously devoted and considered as Cult Films. There are many similarities between “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Pink Flamingos” when watching the films under the lens of Cult Films terms and definitions, since both films are amazingly sensational and possess anti-socialistic, lurid elements for the decade of 1970s.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, a movie that was made in 1975, and “Pink Flamingos”, made in 1972, are both the movies from 1970s. Explaining the decade of 1970s, it is stated that “the gains of feminism and gay rights were redoubled from the 1960s and environmental issues found greater traction in the media and on the grass root level” (Havis, 57). As gay and lesbian rights movements become popularized, the influences also permeated into media and films. Therefore, films from the 1970s spontaneously cast gays and lesbians in the screen, and it was quite sensational and anti-socialistic event for the decade. Both films present main characters as a revolting female impersonator or a wicked transsexual man which are somewhat unusual to see at ordinary times.
