Chapter 3 Morphology : The Words of Language
Word 1) It is an important part of linguistic knowledge and constitute a component of our mental grammars.
2) It is a particular sound string which is associated with a particular meaning.
3) It is the relation between sound and meaning is an arbitrary pairing.
4) It is stored materials in lexicon which is part of a speaker`s linguistic knowledge.
cf. The mental lexicon also specifies the grammatical category or syntactic class of the word.
◉ Content Words and Function Words
Content words / Open class
: nouns, verbs, adjectives, actions, attributes, ideas, and so on that is denote concept.
① They regularly add new words.
② They bear the brunt of the meaning.
Function words / Closed class
: conjunctions, prepositions, articles and so on.
① They specify grammatical relations and have little or no semantic content.
② They connect the content words to the larger grammatical context in ways.
The brain treats content and function words differently. Two classes of words also seem to function differently in slips of the tongue produced by normal individuals.
ex) the journal of the editor ← the editor of the journal
