한국어 초록

우리말은 세계에서 유래를 찾기 어려울 정도로 종결어미가 발달된 언
어이다. 이렇게 종결어미가 발달된 것은 우리말을 사용하는 언어대중의 의식
속에 종결어미에 대한 구분의 필요성을 강하게 느끼기 때문이다. 이러함에도
서구 언어이론의 틀 속에서 우리말의 체계화를 논의하고 있기 때문에 종결어
미에 대한 체계화는 아직 만족할 만한 단계에 이르지 못하고 있다.
특히 하나의 형태가 여러 문장종결법에 쓰이는 것들은 그 처리에 있어 여러
가지 견해를 보인다. 이러한 논의틀은 우리말의 문장종결법이 종결어미와 일
대 일의 대응을 보이지 않는 데서 출발한 것이다.
이 글은 우리말의 문장종결법은 명제와 종결어미 및 수행억양에 의해서 드러
남을 밝히고자 했다. 이러한 관점에서 서술문과 의문문 및 감탄문에 쓰이는
‘ 니’는 동음이의 형태가 아니라 하나의 종결어미이고， 명제와 수행억양의 다
름에 의해서 문장종결법을 달리 나타내는 것으로 보았다.
그리고 ‘-니’의 쓰임이 세 개의 문장종결법으로 제한되는 것은 ‘-니’가 선어말
어미로 쓰일 때 가졌던 실현재약을 그대로 이어받은 것임을 밝히고자 했다
한 걸음 더 나아가 선어말어미에서 종결어미로 기능이 전이되면 이것은 종결
어미의 체계 속에 놓이기 때문에 종결어마의 체계 속에서 찾고자 했다.

영어 초록

This study shows that Korean modality is expressed not only by the final
ending, but also by the proposition and the intonation. We can see that the
classification of the final endings according to the modality of sentence should be
reconsidered. In this view point, the ending '-ni' used in the declarative sentence,
the interrogative sentence, or the exclamatory sentence is not a homonym form
but a final ending. It is used differently according to the difference of the
proposition and the intonation.
The final ending '-ni' is resulted from the change of prefinal ending. The
reason that its usage is limited to the declarative sentence, the interrogative
sentence, and the exclamatory sentence is that it retains its characteristics as a
prefinal ending.
The final ending '-ni' in the declarative sentence has the restriction to be used
only in the sentence in which the declarative word is an adjective but the prefinal
ending '-eott- or -gett-' is not expressed. Therefore '-nuni' has the restriction to
be used only in the sentence in which the prefinal ending '-eott- or -gett-' is
expressed on the condition that the verb or the adjective is used as the declarative
word in the sentence. The '-ni' is always used in the utterance presupposing the
hearer and represents a treatment of very low level. When '-ni' is used in the
declarative sentence or the exclamatory sentence, it represents a low level like a
basic level element '-da/nenda.' In the interrogative sentence, it represents a low
level like a basic level element '-nenya.' Although there is a final ending of the
same low level as '-ni' especially in the exclamatory sentence or in the promise
sentence, it is the fuzzy edge phenomenon that '-ni' is used as a final ending.
The meaning of '-ni' is to express the displeasure or the complaint about the
hearer.
