Empathy - Altruism
There are many arguments that indicate the traits of empathy and altruism play a critical role in the development of pro-social behavior. There are two main arguments regarding empathy and altruism. The first argument is egoism, which argues that every time an individual acts in a pro-social manner they are acting out of self-interest or ego. This argument supports the idea that people only act pro-socially when they are getting something in return. In contrast, the empathy-altruism theory suggests that people act pro-socially if they feel empathy for someone else. In other words if they can put themselves in another person’s shoes they are more likely to help them in times of crisis or conflict (Batson and Shaw, 1991).
Batson and Shaw argue that helping or altruistic behavior is highly correlated with empathy for others. They argue that a person cannot be motivated for selfish and altruistic reasons at the same time for the same reason.
