This certain style or position of Theme in a clause would lead a thematic structure. In Introduction to Functional Grammar, Hallyday presented a pattern which is announcing Theme by means of a particle, i.e. wa in Japanese language. Korean has same functional particles (or postpositions) which are un/nun (은/는), i/ka (이/가).
In this essay, I intend to review whole phenomena and overall difference between original text’s thematic choices and that of translated versions. This study will include both English and Korean thematic choices in a literature, sonaki. The analysis conducted based on Text Analysis theory based on SFL by Holliday (1985 and 2004), and Kim (2007).
2. Data collection
The literature my research group decided to analyze is a highly noted Korean literature, sonaki (소나기, 황순원). We have collected one original text in Korean and three translated versions in English. Two of the translated texts are from the Internet, so there are some typos and mistranslation which I left as it is. If you find any typo or mistranslation in the analysis table, it would be the original source text as it is.
