When a person commits an intense crime such as murder, the policy is to put him or her to death. This has been generally accepted for many years. However, it has been a controversial issue to many people. Some advocate the abolition of capital punishment and others argue that it should be preserved. I believe that capital punishment should not be maintained because we should risk the possibility of executing an innocent person.
The most important reason why capital punishment should be abolished is because of some cases that when a person is sentenced to death, there is a possibility that they may be innocent. According to the research, there are 1% of misjudgement annually when judge sentence a criminal to death in United States. When the court put an innocent person to death, it is no different from a murder. Also, capital punishment can be misused for political purposes. For example, Timothy John Evans was a Welsh prisoner who was hanged in the United Kingdom in 1950 for the murder of his infant daughter. Events subsequent to his execution, including a book proclaiming his innocence and a pardon for his daughter’s murder, helped to get capital punishment abolished in Britain. It is one of the most serious miscarriages of justice that has occurred in Britain. Like this case, a misjudgement can give a shock to the society and destruct the public order.
