PART 1 : Strategy of CO2 Reduction drived by Solar energy
Strategy of CO2 Reduction. Natural photosynthesis by chlorophyll molecules involves the generation of carbohydrates and oxygen from the abundant raw materials CO2 and H20 using sunlight as the driving force. Photosynthesis is balanced by the oxidation of the reduced carbon compounds back to CO2 and H20 through combustion, decay and respiration.
The CO2 reduction process is thermodynamically uphill, economical CO2 fixation is possible only if renewable energy, such as solar energy, is used as the energy source.
Solar energy can be harnessed to drive CO2 conversion by:
(1) artificial photosynthesis using homogeneous and heterogeneous systems,
(2) electrochemical reduction using solar electric power, and
(3) hydrogenation of CO2 using solar-produced hydrogen. [1]
1. Artificial photosynthesis
This type of research is expected to have application in the technology for the conversion of solar energy into hydrogen and oxygen (water splitting). Plants have the ability to convert sunlight into chemical energy. If mankind is able to mimic the photosynthetic process with artificial molecular systems this opens the possibility to exploit an unlimited source of energy.
