- Sometimes lower-level units may be bypassed if higher-level units are unitized, and automaticity can result.
- Context enables our perceptual mechanism to “guess”
ex. “Move the lever to the r○ ○ ○ ○.”

- 하위단계의 요소들은 상위단계가 이미 단위화(unitization) 되어 있으면 자동적으로 처리되어 별도의 분석과정 없이 뛰어넘게 되는 경우가 있는데 이를 top-down, context-driven processing 이라고 한다. 이 과정에서는 전체적인 내용을 글의 맥락과 앞뒤에 등장하는 단어들을 통해 인식하므로 문장의 일부분이 생략되어 있을 때도 추측이 가능하다.
- 글자의 인식에 있어서도 동일하게 처리되어 위의 예와 같은 경우 글자의 모양 자체는 동일하나 맥락상으로 파악하면 자연스럽게 다른 단어로 인식이 된다.
