Some people say enforcing Standard American English in public schools is not desirable because a single dominant language may extinguish the cultures and languages of various minorities who belong to the nation. Though their claims may be valid, their claims fail to capture the whole picture. As Gloria E. Anzaldua said to Chicanos in her article How to Tame a Wild Tongue, she argues, We are a synergy of two cultures (135). I agree that the power of the Unites States of America derives from a synergy of cultures. In other words, the United States of America consist of various languages and cultures that have been combined in an efficient and harmonious fashion. However, under a nation where national identity, which is one of the critical factors for existence of a nation, has not been firmly established, a policy that encourages various languages and cultures may jeopardize the existence of a nation.
