Mr. Bennet은 Mrs. Bennet의 이러한 물질추구 속성과 무지함을 조롱함으로써 아이러니스트 역할을 하고 있다. 오스틴은 다음의 문단에서 아이러니스트로서의 Mr. Bennet을 소개하고, Mrs. Bennet의 무지함을 나타낸다.
Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three and twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Her mind was less difficult to develope. She was a woman of mean understanding,, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news. (Pride and Prejudice 4)
