I. General Issues
A. Geography
Taiwan, which is an island in East Asia, is formally known as the Republic of China (ROC). Taiwan is situated in the western Pacific. It is about 515 kilometers north of the Philippines, 120 kilometers south of Japan, and 160 kilometers off the southeastern coast of the Chinese mainland. With an area of 35,751 square kilometers, Taiwan is slightly smaller than Vancouver island.
Taiwan is similar in shape to a tobaco leaf. It is 394 kilometers long and has a maximum width of 144 kilometers. Based on the country profile of Economist.com, Majestic mountain ranges, featuring some of the highest peaks in East Asia, run north to south, dividing the island into several distinct areas. The shoreline of Taiwan offers only a few natural harbors of any size. There are nearly 80 smaller isalands liked to Taiwan by geographic, economic, or administrativeties.
