So-Called Cellulite; It is an Invented Disease.
The $3 billion market for anti-cellulite products, from mechanical massagers to bio ceramic shorts, is booming. Finding a cure has become a fixation among cosmetic researchers. So many women have cellulite, and they spend a lot of money trying to get rid of it.
An infrared laser tuned to a particular frequency liquefied fat cells without harming the overlying skin. it could also melt the trapped fat lumps in cellulite. And one company already works on a radio-frequency laser.
But not everyone is so optimistic. Inserting a laser into the fat doesn’t do anything more than regular liposuction; it just adds another complication: the laser.
Given cellulite’s long history of failed cures. The field has a strong commercial spirit, but not a tremendous scientific one. The F. D. A. still accepts before-and-after photos as proof of a cellulite treatment’s effect, despite the fact that photos are easily manipulated.
When the buttock is tensed, the cellulite on it will look worse. The buttock in the ‘before’ photo is slightly tensed. It makes a difference.
Imperfect science, it is no doubt. But then, the forces driving cellulite’s “race for the cure” have always been more than strictly scientific. Clearly, the person who figures this out will do very well.
