Japonisme is known as an idol for 19th century’s European artists, especially post-impressionists. The term Japonisme was first used in France in 19th century that describes the Japanese culture and art. Japanese culture was so fashionable at that time, and its influences were so enormous that people actually can see the contribution in European art and the culture. One of artists who hailed Japonisme was Vincent van Gogh, renowned artist who had peculiar style of painting that differed him from other artists. Japanese prints were the biggest contributors of van Gogh’s paintings those changed his style continuously. There were four stages van Gogh went through, discovery, appropriation, adaptation, and recreation, which trained him to gain his style. Each one of four steps are clearly documented on van Gogh’s works. Van Gogh found his own Japonisme style in him.
