Ⅰ. 서 론상징적 상호작용론은 가족 학에서 독특하고 중요한 위치를 점하고 있다. 상징적 상호작용론은 가족학이 하나의 학문으로서 자리잡기 위해 노력하였던 1920년대와 30년대를 풍미했던 주요이론이었으며, 오늘날 가장 대중적인 가족이론 중의 하나로서 다른 어떤 가족이론들보다도 가족학에 큰 영향을 미쳤다(Hays, 1977 ; Howard, 1981).
이처럼 상징적 상호작용론이 가족 학에서 큰 부분을 차지하게 된 이유는 다음의 두 가지 요인 때문이다. 첫째, 이 이론이 탄탄한 개념적 유산을 가지고 있다는 점이다. 상징적 상호작용론을 지향하는 학자들은 처음부터 “개념을 다루는 것(playing with ideas)”에 관심을 가지고 개념연구에 몰두했다. 둘째, 이 이론이 탄탄한 연구의 전통을 가지고 있기 때문이다. Thomas와 Znaniecki(1918-1920)의 기념비적 연구, 유럽과 미국의 폴란드계 농민(The Polish Peasant in Europe and America)을 시작으로 상징적 상호작용론자들은 대부분 경험적 세계를 통해 통찰을 얻고자 노력했다. 특히, 약 90년 간 사회 및 가정생활에 대한 연구에서 이들이 취했던 다양한 접근방법을 추적하는 것은 실로 흥미로운 일이 아닐 수 없다.
상징적 상호작용론이란 이름에서 나타나듯이 이 이론은 상징, 즉 공유된 의미와 상호작용, 즉 언어적, 비언어적 행동과 의사소통 간의 연결에 초점을 둔다. 상징적 상호작용론은 근본적으로 인간이 어떻게 상징적 세계를 창조하며, 이렇게 만들어진 상징적 세계는 어떻게 인간의 행동을 형성하는지를 이해하기 위한 참조적 틀이다.
따라서 본고에서는 상징적 상호작용론에 대하여 고찰해 보고자 한다.
Ⅱ. 상징적 상호작용론의 배경
1. 이론의 역사적 배경
상징적 상호작용이론은 제임스, 듀이, 미드, 토머스, 쿨리 등의 미국 실용주의 철학가에 의해 발달되어온 이론으로서 가족분석을 위한 개념적인 틀로 가장 많이 사용되어 오고 있다.
