It’s September 15, 2006. I’m sitting on a bench in Central Square, waiting for my friends. What a fine autumn day! Fleecy clouds dot the pale blue sky, and the sun shines brightly; maybe a little bit too strong. A cool wind rises constantly. I can feel it on my back. Smell of fried chickens from Popeye’s located under the Square makes me hungrier than ever.
Right in front of me, light green lawns blow in the breeze. Several sprinklers are spraying water on the grass. There are white wooden signs with yellow plastic chains around the lawns saying, “Keep off the grasses,” in bold black letters. I see a dragonfly—the first one I’ve seen this year—on the right edge of the sign in front of me, which makes me realize it really is autumn. The trees around, however, are still green. Even though only a few of them are actually changing colors, I know most of them will be turning yellow, red, and brown soon enough. A little boy holding his mom’s hand gives a displeased look to the fountain in the middle of the Central Square, for it doesn’t spout.
Suddenly I hear the laughter of girls. .
