THERE ARE TWO ALMOST OPPOSITE MOTIVATIONS for biomimetic robotics(robots made using biological principles). We have seen one of them already: the mechanics, physics, and chemistry used by biological organism are often superior to the designs of engineers and scientists. This should come as no surprise-evolution, by definition, produces very effective adaptations to the environment.
Evolution is not design, though, and it can be difficult to decide which bits of an organism are there because they are effective and which are only there because of the evolutionary path the species has followed. An example in human terms is the appendix, a part of the digestive system with no current useful function, and probably a vestige of the extra digestive apparatus needed to process grass and other vegetation. A robot digestive system based on a human one would not need to include a robot appendix.
The other motivation for pursuing a biomimetic approach is to gain a better understanding of how living things work. Biologist` theories about living creatures can be difficult to test and prove. Engineering the theory into a robot concentrates the mind and forces the biologist to think out all the details. The robot`s behavior can then be used to test the theory.
