소개글
Mathematics(A discrete introcuction)
Edward R. Scheinerman

27.10 A bag contains ten identically wrapped boxes, but the contents of the boxes have different values (e.g., each contains a different amount of money). Alice and Bob are each going to pick one box from the bag.
Suppose Alice picks one of the ten boxes at random and then Bob picks at random from the remaining boxes. What is the probability that the contents of Alice’s box are more valuable than the contents of Bob’s box? Is there an advantage to going first?
Sol) Call the boxes 1, 2, 3, …, 10
The sample space S contains all length-two lists of boxes without repetition.
So |S| = 10 x 9 = 90
P(1, 2) = P(1, 3) … = P(9,10) = 1/90
the probability that the contents of Alice’s box are more valuable than
the contents of Bob’s box :
the probability : 45 x 1/90 = 1/2
Since 1 – 1/2 = 1/2 . Alice and bob could end up with the same amount.
- There is no advantage to go first.
