“What is sociology?”
When I say that I major in sociology, many people often ask me this simple question. The answer is simple. Sociology is about the society. I think this quite circular answer is the best way that I can explain sociology. There is still one question remaining. “What is a society?” I have asked that question to myself more than a hundred times, but I don’t seem to be able to find a clear answer yet. Although I am quite sure that nobody, not even sociologists, can provide a simple, clear definition of society, I tried to have my own definition of society.
The word “society” is not a material noun. We can not listen to it, touch it, smell it, taste it, or even see it. If so, is society really in existence? Of course, it exists. Society is alive, and it is changing even at this moment. Over a long period of time, society has changed a lot. Prior to the industrial revolution, people lived in an agrarian society.
