Using traditional Korean motifs and danchong colors, Park Saeng-kwang revived the tradition of colored ink painting that had been part of Korean culture for thousands of years. His artistic career, spanning a period of over sixty years, can be divided roughly into four stages. The first stage began in 1920 and continued up to Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. During this period, he stayed in Japan where he had the opportunity to study realist painting techniques from masters of the modern Kyoto school while becoming active in the Japanese art scene. Park’s second stage began after his return to Korea and continued until the late 1970s when he went through a prolonged period of artistic self-searching. Yet at his solo exhibition in 1977, his style of painting evidenced a decisive transformation. Park turned away from the Japanese-influenced elements in his earlier paintings and, instead,
