Sijo was the most popular form of poetry of Korea from fifteenth century to the most recent pre-modern period. Sijo has its root on hyangga of Silla period. As time passes, it gets influenced by minyo (Commoner뭩 song) and about the middle of Koryŏ period, it finally becomes a genre of literature with its own structure. On the other hand, sasŏl sijo has more flexibility in form and in topic as well. As any form of sijo are considered as the most comparable literature form to Koreans culture and mentality, and many times, sijo is used to sing the love and longing for love.
