Stevie Smith, who was born in 1902 and died in 1971, is a female writer who wrote short proses and poems. These writings, however, are not ‘familiar’ pieces. Readers are, according to Romana Huk, “dumfounded ...with their seemingly simple speaking voices infiltrated by the orientations of competing, incongruent discourses that interfere with her often quite traditional poetic forms” (1). Not only numerous critics but also contemporary poets such as Philip Larkin and Seamus Heaney commented her as “almost unclassifiable” and “eccentric”. Constantly transforming the genres, themes, narratives, and styles, her poetic identity is a metamorphosis itself. However, this does not affect her usage of plain and simple words in poems and short writings where such depth, insight and vitality spring from. The poem My Muse, included in the Selected Poems (1962), depicts an agonized poet who lacks a poetic inspiration. A poet who yearns for his or her personified muse is a traditional literary trope which appears from epic invocations to Petrarchan love sonnets.
