요론NTP 기술의 적용에 의해 생성되는 부산물은 초기의 VOCs보다도 독성이 훨씬 적지만,바이오필터의 활성미생물을 25%나 저하시키는 단점도 갖고 있다. 동시에 NTP장치 중
의 DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) 반응기에 의해 생성되는 CO(일산화탄소)의 피독작용을 저하시켜 주고, 미량영양물질의 결핍과 부족으로 인한 활성미생물의 성장저해도 방지하고, NTP 시스템의 운전과 VOCs의 제거율 향상에 따른 미생물 활동 스트레스도 저감시켜 주는 연구개발도 추진할 필요가 있다. 폐기물처리장이나 폐수처리장 등의 방출공기에서 발산되는 유해화학물질로서의 저농도 휘발성 유기화합물(VOCs)을 제거하는 기술은 화학적이든 미생물학적이든 플라즈마적이든, 이들 기술을 동시에 적용하는 병합적 기술이든, 미기상환경 및 대기환경 연관 중소기업이 개발해야 하는 기술이고, 생산해야 하는 제품이라고 할 수 있다.
1. 기상환경과 휘발성 유기화합물
기상환경과 대기환경의 공기질을 보전하고, 미기상환경과 실내환경의 공기질을 보호하는데 있어서, 가장 중요한 인류기원 및 산업유래의 오염물질은 휘발성 유기화합물이라고 할 수 있다. 휘발성 유기화합물(VOCs: volatile organic compounds)은 산불・삼림화재・낙엽수 발화 등의 자연적・천연적 요인으로 발생되는 미기상・대기환경 오염물질이기도 하고, 각종 산업용・생활용 용매・용제의 생산과 이용・석유화학공업・화학산업・농업・임업의 생산성 제고활동・폐기물 매립시설・폐기물처리시설・운송/수송/교통 등의 인류기원적 활동으로부터 발생되는 미기상・실내작업환경 오염물질이기도 하다. 유럽연합(EU)의 조사연구에 의하면, 2010년도의 휘발성 유기화합물(VOCs)의 발생량은 기준연도의 1990년에 비하여 56%나 저하되고 있다. 그 원인은 미기상 환경의 보전을 위한 대기오염 방지기술의 첨단기술적 개발과 운송・수송・교통 부문에서의 에너지 효율성의 향상 및 방출규제기준의 엄격화 등이라고 할 수 있다.
그럼에도 불구하고, 지구온난화가스 방출규제와 더불어 휘발성 유기화합물의 발산량이 상당히 안정화되어 있는 부문도 존재하고 있다.
