The purpose of this paper is to investigate the aspects and processes of the umlaut in a morpheme in the Cheju dialect. The results which is discussed in this paper are summarized as follows Firstly, the inserted consonant is the greatest constraints on the umlaut. For, if there is one inserted consonant which is [+coronal], the umlaut has not occured. Second, if the inserted consonant has the feature of [-consonantal], the aspects of the umlaut are as the following scheme. (도표) Based on the above scheme, it is argued that the morphemes in which the assimilator was a diphtong in the period of the occurrence of umlaut did not experience the umlaut, and it occurred in suffixes earlier than any other sort of morphemes. And it is shown that the umlaut of u has occurred in the low rate in comparison with other vowels.
