When it comes to food and culture, I remind myself of one of my favorite books: “Like Water for Chocolate” by Laura Esquivel. “Like water for chocolate” is one of the most interesting novels I’ve read up to now, where the author uses various forms of food (raw and cooked/cuisines) as a metaphor to reveal emotional state and personalities of characters. How is this novel related to the topic of food culture in globalizing world? Some people argue that emotion and food, (where emotion is defined as “feelings that all human-beings naturally possess”, and food as “the substance that all living things consume for source of energy and survival”) are a universal culture. So my interpretation is that, wouldn’t this be the reason why the author so decidedly chose to use “food” as a metaphor for emotions?
There are tons of other possible metaphors that can be used to express emotions, such as colors.
