Ⅰ. CHARACTERISTICS OF BJT
1. INTRO
To mechanical engineer, BJT might be not familiar. The purpose of this experiment is to understand the fundamentals of bipolar junction transistor (BJT) and its characteristics in active region.
2. THEORY
- Transistor
Transistor is composed of semiconductor material that amplifies a signal or opens or closes a circuit. It was invented in 1947 at Bell Labs, transistors became the key ingredient of all digital circuits including computers. Nowadays microprocessors contains tens of millions of microscopic transistors.
Prior to the invention of transistors, digital circuits were composed of vacuum tubes, and it had many disadvantages. They were much larger, required more energy, dissipated more heat, and were more likely to failures. It is safe to say that without the invention of transistors, computing as we know it today would not be possible.
- BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor)
A Bipolar Junction Transistor is an active semiconductor device formed by two P-N junctions whose function is amplification of an electric current.
