한국어 초록

이글은 남명학 관련 문헌의 번역 현황을 정리하고, 번역서의 체제와 내용을 검토하고서 향후의 과제에 대해 몇 가지 제언을 한 것이다.
남명의 저술 『남명집』 번역은 어느 정도 완성되었다. 그러나 문제점이 없는 것이 아니기 때문에, 한두 명의 전문가가 오역을 바로잡고 윤문을 하여 수정판을 다시 간행해야 할 것이다. 『학기류편』 번역도 성리학에 이해가 깊은 전문가가 다시 검토하여 번역문의 미비점을 바로잡고, 최근 연구 성과를 반영하여 수정판을 내는 것이 필요하다. 또한 아직까지 논쟁이 계속되고 있는 『남명집』 판본 문제에 대해서도 정리하는 작업이 요구되며, 『남명집』 정본화사업 추진도 절실히 요구된다.
남명의 전기 자료 및 연원록 번역은 남명학연구소에서 상당한 성과물을 냈지만, 아직도 번역해야 할 자료가 여전히 남아 있다. 예컨대 후인들의 문집에 산견되는 남명에 대한 기록을 모두 모아 번역하는 일, 각 종 序·跋 및 남명 유적지 건축물의 기문·상량문 등을 모아 번역하는 일 등은 서둘러 추진할 필요가 있다.
남명 문인의 저술 번역은 약 10분의 1정도만 번역되었거나 번역 중에 있고, 그 나머지 문집은 번역이 불투명하다. 이런 문집은 분량이 매우 적어 국가기관에서 번역하기 어렵기 때문에 문중이나 기념사업회에서 번역 사업이 활발히 일어나길 기대한다. 또한 남명학파의 범주에 넣을 수 있는 남명 사숙인들의 문집도 모두 번역해야 남명학파의 실체를 구명하는 데 활력을 불어넣을 수 있다.
이런 사업을 추진하기 위해서는 지방자치단체와 대학교와 문중이 모두 적극적인 의지를 가져야 한다. 특히 경상대학교 남명학연구소가 남명학의 메카로 거듭나기 위해서는 학교 당국은 물론 지방자치단체 및 문중과 긴밀한 협조체제를 구축하여 번역 사업을 주도적으로 추진해 나가야 할 것이다.
또한 지금까지 연구기관에서 번역한 성과물은 교열과 윤문 등의 과정을 거쳐서 오역이나 비문이 비교적 적다. 그러나 문중에서 단독으로 번역한 경우는 심각한 문제점이 드러난다. 따라서 번역의 질을 제고하기 위해서라도 재야 학자가 혼자 번역하는 일은 가급적 삼가야 하며, 연구기관에서 번역을 한 뒤 교열과 윤문을 거쳐 출간하는 것이 바람직할 것이다.

영어 초록

This study set out to sort out the translation situations of Nammyeonghak-related literature, review the system and content of translated books, and provide a couple of suggestions for future tasks.
The translation of Nammyeongjip written by Nammyeong has been completed to some degree, but with some issues left. A couple of experts should correct wrong translations, do embellishing works, and publish a revised version. It is the same with the translation of Hakgiryupyeon, for which experts with a profound understanding of Sung Confucianism should correct deficiencies through review and publish a revised version by reflecting the latest research accomplishments. It is also required to sort out the block book issues with Nammyeongjip whose controversy has been going still and urgently needed to carry on a project for its original copy.
As for translation works for Nammyeong by later generations, the Nammyeonghak Research Institute has collected his biographic data, translated them, and generated considerable results, but there are still materials left for translation. There is a need to put some speed on collecting all records about him seen in the collections of works by later generations and translating them in addition to all kinds of books and postscripts and the Gimuns and Sangryangmuns of the buildings in his relics.
About a tenth of the works by Nammyeong literary men have been translated or under progress with no guarantee for the translation of the remaining collections of works. Those collections of works are very small in volume and thus difficult to be translated by national institutions. The concerned families and commemorative project committees need to take an initiative in them and make active translation efforts. In addition, all the collections of works by the Nammyeong Sasukins who can be put in the category of Nammyeong School should be translated so that more vitality will be invested in the efforts to investigate the substance of the school.
It is essential that local governments, universities and families should demonstrate active determination in such a project. In order for the Nammyeonghak Research Institute of Gyeong-sang National University to flourish as the Mecca of Nammyeonghak, the school should form a close collaboration network with the local governments and families and take a leadership in translation projects.
The translations by the research institute have a relatively low level of wrong translations and sentences thanks to the reviewing and embellishing process. The independent works by the concerned families, however, are rife with serious problems. Scholars out of office should refrain themselves from independent translation to improve the translation quality. It is also desirable to leave the translation job to research institutes and publish the results after reviewing and embellishing.
