Yves Saint Laurent's innovative, groundbreaking attempt to elevate fashion into the realm of fine art established him as one of the most influential fashion designers of the twentieth century. He had great interest in art, especially in regard to painting, and his collections often paid homage to artists he admired, such as Vincent van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, and Henri Matisse. He was inspired by a wide range of artists and their works, so he recreated them as wearable art. To Yves Saint Laurent, clothing could be movable artwork. This he demonstrated through elaborate cutting, the skilled handcraft of couture and an instinctive taste for color. He revived Haute Couture in Paris from the 1960s to the late 1980s through his collections, which bespoke a love of art as opposed to simply commercial design. He made art through the connection between clothing and fine art, particularly painting. Thus he argued that fashion was a fine art. Nowadays, clothing is perceived not merely as a covering for the human body.
