In “Learning to Read,” Malcolm X argues that white Americans have been distorting history for their own purposes. Malcolm writes, “The teachings of Mr. Muhammad stressed how history had been ‘whitened’—when white men had written history books, the black man simply had been left out” (276). White Americans used various ways like education, prejudice, media, and rules to make their ruling easier. By changing and whitewashing American history, they attributed all the successes to white American blood.

Historically, many great feats of non-white people have been concealed. Malcolm X argues that “Most Occidental philosophy had largely been borrowed from the Oriental thinkers. Socrates, for instance, traveled in Egypt. [. . .] Obviously Socrates got some of his wisdom among the East’s wise men” (281). In prison, he found a bunch of information to support his own idea. It must have been hard work. His hard work led him to help achieve earlier emancipation of black people.
