Positive psychology is the study of the conditions and processes that contributeto the flourishing or optimal functioning of people, groups, and institutions.
Character and virtue are central to positive psychologists' efforts to understand and
promote human flourishing. Positive psychologists defend the virtue hypothesis that
cultivating virtue will make people happy. They are making significant contributions
to understanding how happiness and virtue are inter-related, but they need greater
theoretical clarity about their aims and procedures. There are conceptual and
methodological problems left in their discussions and writings. In this article, I tried
to delve into the theoretical problems of the virtue hypothesis proposed by positive
psychologists. First of all, some aspects of positive psychologist's classification are
idiosyncratic. Positive psychologists failed to recognize the relationship and
interaction among virtues and character strengths. They slide to unwarranted claims
that virtues always lead happiness in each situation and for each person. They
don't notice that practicing virtues is dependent on contexts and situation facing
agents. Finally, they neglect an important fact that happiness is a tangled and
complicated product of the positive and negative.
