The purpose of this study was to investigate important variables which affectmusical interest and musical aptitude of people with visual impairment. Degree of
visual impairment and course level are chosen as crucial factors and tested their
effects on musical interest subcategories(e.g.||| interest||| attitudes||| values) and musical
aptitude areas||| that is||| tonal and rhythm imagery. The 91 participants consisted of 48
males and 43 females. Seventeen in junior school||| 25 in senior high school||| 19 in
graduate work and 30 in music troupe in a school for the blind participated in this
study. Musical interest Index and Korean Music Aptitude Test(KMAT) have been
used to assess musical aptitude and interest of people with visual impairments.
Results of this study can be summarized as follows: First||| there were significant
effects of degree of visual impairment on both musical aptitude subareas||| that is|||
tonal and rhythm imageries. Second||| course level belonged to the school affected one
of musical aptitude||| especially rhythm imagery. Third||| there was no interaction
between degree of visual impairment and course level. Therefore||| degree of visual
impairment and course level should be regarded as crucial factors which affect
musical aptitude subarea(s)||| that is||| tonal or rhythm imagery. Maximum educational
support must be provided to raise musical achievement by considering a student's
musical aptitude in music education.
