According to a 2013 survey, 60% of American college campuses have restricted the First Amendment rights of faculty and students. Alabama’s Troy College has speech codes that restrict the use of words and actions related to sex, race, age, religion, disability and veteran’s status (Censor par 3.). Since the Pilgrims traveled to the New World on the Mayflower in search of freedom, Americans highly regard freedom, equality, and the frontier spirit; thus, the First Amendment states clearly the freedom of speech, religion, press, petition, and assembly. But the freedom of speech in the First Amendment and school pedagogy has conflicted perennially after the Tinker case until now.

Censoring books should be stopped in all public schools. It is shocking that public schools still censor and ban books in this free world. For instance, Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is still banned in some public schools. Censoring spans over not only literature but also textbooks. There are no guidelines defining whether books are good or not. A standard of judgment is totally subjective and relies on emotion.
