Probability overestimation (PO), also known as likelihood overestimation, is the overestimation of the perceived probability of a negative social consequence occurring. Cost overestimation (CO), also known as severity overestimation, is the overestimation of the perceived valence (or ‘awfulness’) of a negative social consequence. Increasing attention has been given to the roles of probability and cost overestimation in the maintenance of social anxiety (e.g., Hofmann, 2004; Smits, Rosenfield, Telch, & McDonald, 2006).
